From the Director: Laying the groundwork

As spring weather arrives, transportation agencies across Minnesota shift their focus from winter response to planning and preparation for the busy construction season ahead. It’s time to lay the groundwork for this year’s projects and infrastructure improvements, all of which will require teamwork, forward thinking, and smart decision making—a mindset reflected through the stories featured this season.

Our coverage includes information about two Minnesota Local Road Research Board (LRRB) guidebooks aimed at helping agencies make informed decisions about public works tools, a helpful guide to spring load restrictions, and an overview of best practices for gravel road construction and maintenance. These resources offer practical guidance for making choices that will save you time, money, and effort down the road. MnLTAP is also highlighting interesting ideas for using public works assets to enhance our environment and build community connections through restoring roadside habitat for pollinators and sandblasting resident-submitted poetry into sidewalks.

Turning knowledge into action is just as important as sharing information, and MnLTAP is proud to offer a variety of in-person, virtual, and hybrid training courses to support you and your team. The inside back page of our quarterly newsletter, Exchange, features upcoming training and events. We really appreciate your help spreading the word by posting this tear-off calendar at your workplace (and if you don't already receive Exchange by mail, it's free to sign up). New offerings to our Roads Scholar Program include an advanced level of the Maintenance Operations and Technical Certificate, as well as an additional level of the Civil Engineering Technician Certificate (II). To stay up-to-date on news and training information, subscribe to MnLTAP’s e-newsletter.

As always, we’re proud to support your work, and the efforts of all Minnesota public works professionals, at every step of the way. Here’s to a great season ahead!
