About the Workshop
This workshop covers topics related to arc welding and cutting processes. It can be held over one or two days, depending on your agency’s needs. The training is held on-site using your agency’s equipment. Student manuals are provided by the instructor.
For one-day trainings, agencies can select topics from the options below. Two-day trainings cover all topics.
Arc Welding Processes
- Shielded metal arc welding (SMAW)/“stick” welding
- Gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW)/tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding
- Gas metal arc welding (GMAW)/metal inert gas (MIG) welding
- Flux-cored arc welding (FCAW)/dual shield welding
Cutting Processes
- Plasma arc cutting
- Carbon arc cutting
- Thermal lance
- Gouge rod/chamfer rod
- Oxy-fuel safety
- Welding safety
Distortion Fundamentals
- The types and causes of weld distortion
- Shrinkage control—preventing or minimizing distortion
- Ten tips and techniques
- Two videos: distortion fundamentals and keeping it square
Practical Metallurgy
- Terminology used in the welding industry
- The mechanical properties of steel and how they are tested
- The structure of carbon steel and how to alter its mechanical properties
- Numbering and naming conventions used in the industry
- Heat treatment techniques used by welders and engineers

Maintenance technicians, mechanics, welders, and supervisors would benefit from this workshop.
Course Instructor
Anthony Sampe has more than 20 years of experience providing specialized maintenance welding training to clients in county and city shops, construction companies, coal and copper mines, and gas and oil industries. He teaches throughout the United States and brings years of practical experience to his workshops.

- 1.0–2.0 Roads Scholar Program Maintenance Certificate credit.
