In memoriam: Jim Grothaus

Jim Grothaus

MnLTAP mourns the loss of former colleague Jim Grothaus, who died March 17, 2025, at the age of 54.

As a registered professional engineer in Minnesota, Jim built a career in the engineering field, working not only with MnLTAP at the University of Minnesota Center for Transportation Studies (CTS), but also with SEH, Hancock Concrete, and most recently, Cemstone.

During his tenure at the University, from May 2001 to November 2017, Jim served as the director of training and technical assistance, later advancing to assistant director for coordinated research and technology transfer. In these roles, he led numerous initiatives, including MnLTAP and the Airport Technical Assistance Program (AirTAP). Jim also helped grow training roles with several Minnesota Department of Transportation offices that carry on to this day. Jim's leadership and commitment to education were built on his strong network and relationships within the local, state, and national transportation communities.

“Jim’s legacy at CTS is marked by his dedication to enhancing transportation training and the lasting relationships he built with those around him,” says Gina Baas, CTS deputy director. “We also remember Jim fondly as a leader who modeled kindness and empathy. His support and genuine care for our staff helped foster a collaborative and nurturing work environment.”

Jim received national recognition for his leadership in transportation education. He served as president of the National Local Technical Assistance Program Association from June 2012 through June 2014 and held all leadership positions for the association. In 2015, he received the Donald C. Stone Award from the American Public Works Association for his work in the areas of continuing and graduate professional education for public works professionals.

MnLTAP extends its condolences to Jim’s wife, two children, and extended family, friends, and colleagues.
