How do Roads Scholars get their start, and what inspires them to go the extra mile? MnLTAP is pleased to share the journeys of recent graduates.

Below, we meet Justin Smykalski, public works maintenance worker at the City of Robbinsdale. He earned the Maintenance Operations and Technical Certificate.

How did you get interested in public works?

Most of my previous employment had similar public works tasks. At one point, I co-owned a small family business doing lawn care, irrigation, and snow removal. Doing those things year-round is what led me toward a public works position.

How does the Roads Scholar certificate help you in your current job & career plans?

It has been a good support tool to continually receive education on a variety of topics and helps us stay engaged in the things that we work on.

What’s a typical day like?

Some days we could be black topping, street sweeping, spraying weeds, picking up trash, replacing ID signs, or snowplowing. It can vary a bit from day to day depending on what time of year it is.

What is your favorite accomplishment?

Obtaining my Class A CDL.

What can other people learn from your path?

I was turned down for public works employment by numerous municipalities for about five years before being accepted here. Having patience and hope goes a long way.

What makes you feel proud at the end of the day?

That I am in a secure job with purpose.

What do you do for hobbies/fun?

I like to travel and see new areas with my family. I also enjoy tent camping up north with them. You’ll also see me a lot in the backyard grilling.
