Workforce recruitment and retention continue to pose challenges for local transportation agencies in Minnesota. To help address the shortage and inspire entry-level professionals, the Minnesota Local Road Research Board (LRRB) often funds projects that promote the various career paths offered by local agencies; past projects have included short videos, print resources, and more.
Most recently, the LRRB audience identified a need to fill rural county engineer positions. Civil engineering students may not be aware of the career path and necessary requirements to become a public works engineer — thus contributing to the workforce shortage. This year, the LRRB funded a project to specifically promote city and county engineering careers, serving as a bridge between classroom and community. The resulting video series offers an inside look at these roles — including what city and county engineers do on a daily basis — and promotes the value of public service to the next generation of professionals.
