LRRB guidebook offers best practices for tree-lined streets

Location, location, location. It applies in many contexts, including tree planting, as noted in the recently published guidebook developed by the Minnesota Local Road Research Board (LRRB), Best Practices for Boulevard Tree Selection.

Trees planted in a boulevard along a roadway lower temperatures and can save on home cooling costs. They also reduce greenhouse gases, decrease stormwater runoff, and serve as attractive green space. Planting the right species in the right location is critical for success.

The best overall practice is to implement a comprehensive street tree master plan strategy, but many communities lack the resources to complete such an intensive effort. This new guidebook concentrates on one solid  first step—developing an approved tree species list. The ultimate goal is to support tree planting and suggest species that are most likely to survive in a boulevard.

Among the challenges with planting boulevard trees: limited space, utilities to work around, and winter maintenance salt residue.

Boulevard tree selection does require planning. Decision-makers need to consider hardiness, foliage, tree height, canopy spread, vulnerability to disease, and Minnesota’s changing climate, among other factors. Thoughtful planning ensures that the right tree is planted in the right place and will receive the right maintenance.
