MnLTAP identifies training needs for winter maintenance, plans new offerings

MnLTAP provides low-cost, high-quality training for all skill levels. The mix and format of courses are adjusted over time to address changing needs and opportunities. In recent months we surveyed local agencies to learn about one always-hot topic: snow and ice control.

“The goal of the survey was to help us identify gaps and critical needs in this area, and then use that information to improve and enhance what we offer,” says Mindy Carlson, MnLTAP program director. “We thank our customer base for participating in the survey—for their time and valuable input.”

Survey respondents indicated interest in a wide range of practices and options to better equip staff to meet cold-weather challenges. Some top responses:

“Based on the information we learned, our team investigated options for operator training as a first step,” Carlson says. “LTAP is currently finalizing details to conduct statewide snowplow operator training using a state-of-the-art mobile simulator. If all goes as planned, we will begin offering training in August, with registration opening in June.”

One goal of the training is to evaluate the simulator method. “Do the operators like this type of training? Is it an effective learning experience? Should we continue this type of training? These are some of the things we’ll consider,” Carlson says. “Keep an eye out for more updates.”
