Tar kettle turned into hydroseeder

Warwick Township in Pennsylvania maintains more than 89 miles of roadway, 80 acres of parkland, and 5 miles of trails. The township schedules annual road improvement and park maintenance projects to ensure the safety of residents and park visitors.

Historically, the township would seed and straw these areas by hand, requiring an inordinate amount of time away from other projects and intensive labor by workers. A more efficient process was needed for restoration, seeding, and reseeding after paving projects.

The township retrofitted an existing piece of equipment to construct a hydroseeder instead of purchasing a new, costly one. The township employees converted a 1995 Crafco© EZ Pour 100 Crack Sealing machine into a hydroseeder.

This new piece of equipment provides a much more efficient and reliable restoration process than the previous method. Now, employees can simply drive and spray the seed as needed. The cost to restore this equipment was approximately $1,500.

The project received an honorable mention in the Innovative Project category of the 2023 Build a Better Mousetrap national program
