Smart Salting refreshers, certification training available

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) recently created Smart Salting Refreshers as supplemental training between certification trainings. The free, three-hour refreshers are available for anyone who has a current Smart Salting certification and are hosted online by the MPCA. Certification trainings are also scheduled this fall.

Each refresher takes a deeper dive into different aspects of winter maintenance practices:

  • Weather for Winter Maintenance Refresher. Take a closer look at weather, prediction tools, and in-time pavement conditions.
  • Salt & Snow Storage Refresher. Analyze your salt and snow storage practices and review regulations to minimize product loss and stormwater runoff exposure.
  • Liquid Deicer Refresher. Consider starting, expanding, or learning more about liquid deicers.

Some refreshers were held in October and others are coming up in November. Organizations can also host a private in-person or online refresher training for their crew with a cost share by contacting smartsalting.pca@state.mn.us.

Level 1 and Level 2 certification trainings are also scheduled this fall:

  • Level 1. This certification is designed for individual road salt applicators. It consists of two classes: Roads (high/low speed snowplow operation) and Parking Lots and Sidewalks (private/public walkways and/or parking lots and service roads). Participants earn a five-year certification.
  • Level 2. Organizations can earn Level 2 certification by assessing their salt use using the Smart Salting Assessment tool and taking steps to minimize usage. Participants can be certified by using the tool directly or working through it in a Level 2 training. Participants earn a two-year certification.
