With more than 100 miles of road to lay down with temporary markings during road improvements, the long process of creating layouts was inefficient. The Road Commission of Kalamazoo County, Michigan, wanted to find a machine that was able to produce temporary markings, eliminating the layout process. The markings are crucial to define centerlines, lane lines, edge lines, and non-passing zone designations on road surfaces to be permanently painted when a project is complete.

Unable to find a machine that would leave temporary markings with repetitive consistency, the commission made its own. Using a GPS system donated to them and a $6,700 Bobcat, staff created the pavement marking layout machine. The machine accurately maps the placement markings and minimizes repetitive time laying out the roads. The markings are then used by the final team to place the permanent pavement markings on the new road surface.
