No agency wants to apply a solution that isn’t defensible and sustainable. An LRRB reference guide gives local agency staff a resource on four intelligent warning devices (also known as active warning signs). The guide includes a general explanation on the use of the signs and their effectiveness, recommended installation protocols, alternative countermeasures to consider, and maintenance considerations.
The four devices are:
- LED-enabled sign
- Radar speed feedback sign
- Rectangular rapid flashing beacon
- Dynamic "No Turn on Red" sign
With this guide, agency staff can identify whether implementation is warranted. The guide also provides sourced responses to citizens’ requests.
The information provided must be used with engineering judgment. Because of the differences between urban and rural environments and city and county agencies, along with staff availability, there is no one-size-fits-all approach.
