Flaggers are a very important part of road construction crews. A short handout developed by Todd Morrison, a flagging instructor for the American Traffic Safety Services Association, highlights some advice for flaggers. Learn more.
DO:
- Always be alert. Cell phones are bad for drivers and even worse for flaggers.
- Have an escape route. Be prepared to run if needed.
- Use standard flagging signals.
- Be visible. Wear appropriate safety gear.
DON'T:
- Flag from a seated position. Drivers can’t see you as well and it will slow you down if you need to run.
- Park your vehicle near you. You might get pinned between it and an oncoming vehicle.
- Get distracted. No texting or eating.
