Tips for flaggers

flagger stopping traffic

Flaggers are a very important part of road construction crews. A short handout developed by Todd Morrison, a flagging instructor for the American Traffic Safety Services Association, highlights some advice for flaggers. Learn more.

DO:

  • Always be alert. Cell phones are bad for drivers and even worse for flaggers.
  • Have an escape route. Be prepared to run if needed.
  • Use standard flagging signals.
  • Be visible. Wear appropriate safety gear.

DON'T:

  • Flag from a seated position. Drivers can’t see you as well and it will slow you down if you need to run.
  • Park your vehicle near you. You might get pinned between it and an oncoming vehicle.
  • Get distracted. No texting or eating.
