Asphalt crack treatment: FAQs and technical resources

Asphalt crack FAQs cover

Crack treatment is one of the most-used pavement preservation practices. Although the technique is simple, several nuances make it more of an art than a science. A new quick reference guide from the LRRB provides an overview of crack treatment, guidance on several FAQs, and a high-level summary of several technical resources.

Crack sealing is an important preventive treatment in a pavement preservation program. Many factors go into determining if and how to best implement a crack treatment program.

The 16-page, easy-to-use guide synthesizes several technical documents plus interviews with local technical and industry representatives. Although much of this information is research based, some is anecdotal or advice from experienced practitioners. The intent is to provide an overview so agencies can draw their own conclusions on how to best implement a crack treatment program.

The guide helps implement the results of two-year research study that compared clean-and-seal asphalt pavement crack repairs to rout-and-seal repairs. The life-cycle cost analysis found rout-and-seal repairs to be slightly more cost-effective.
