Application Rates: Summary
Prepare a plan so staff and contractors know the desired maintenance levels needed throughout the property and where to store snow and salt. Remove snow early and often by shoveling, plowing, blowing, brushing, and scraping to prevent bonding to the pavement. Deicing after the storm is the most common strategy to remove snow and ice remaining after clearing snow. Anti-icing uses liquids before the storm to prevent the snow from bonding to the pavement. If snow and ice remain on the pavement after removal, consider using sand to provide traction. If bare pavement is needed, choose the correct deicer based on its effective melting temperature and use application rate guidelines to determine how much deicer or anti-icer to apply. Minimize salt and other deicer use to protect local surface and groundwater. Spot-treat areas of ice and snow rather than treat the whole site if possible. Clean up and reuse any sand or salt left on the pavement after the melting is done. Evaluate the work and adjust as needed to improve snow and ice operations and reduce salt use.
