Application Rates: Tools for Application in Large Areas

Many types of equipment are used in parking lots and sidewalks. Depending on the size of the parking lot, a large plow truck may be appropriate or a standard pickup trucks with a plow, or smaller equipment may be best. The better they are at clearing the snow, the less salt can be used.

  • Plow trucks — equipped with plow and granular spreaders or liquid tanks and spray bars
  • Pickup trucks — equipped with plow and granular spreader or liquid tank and spray bar
  • UTVs — equipped with plow attachment, broom attachments, blower attachments, granular spreader or liquid tanks and spray bar
  • Loader/Skid Steers — with plow, broom attachments, blower attachments, granular spreader, liquid tank and spray bar

Match snow removal tools to the specific snow type; heavy or wet accumulation requires heavy-duty equipment like plows and frontend loaders, whereas dry snow is efficiently cleared with blowers or brooms. Better removal leads to lower deicer application rates. Mechanical brooms/brushes often remove enough snow that deicers are not needed —see this Wisconsin SaltWise video review of walk-behind brushes
