Pavement Temperatures and Effects: Summary

Pavement temperature plays a major role in whether snow and ice melt or freeze on parking lots and sidewalks. Pavement temperature is influenced by many factors, including air temperature, sunlight, shade, time of day, wind, humidity, freeze–thaw cycles, and ground conditions below the surface. Because of these factors, pavement temperature is often different from air temperature and can change throughout the winter. Understanding pavement temperature helps explain when melting or refreezing may occur and which ice melt products will work — or may not work at all. Pavement temperature can be checked or estimated using handheld or truck-mounted infrared thermometers. Your state road weather (RWIS) stations can provide useful information on pavement temperature, but not specific to your site. Considering pavement temperature in winter maintenance decisions leads to safer walkways and parking lots, more effective use of deicers, and reduced salt use.
