Application Rates: Summary
Use less salt and other deicers to protect local surface and groundwater. Remove snow early and often by shoveling, plowing, blowing, and scraping to prevent bonding to the pavement. Deicing after the storm is the most common strategy for homeowners to remove snow and ice remaining after removal. Anti-icing uses liquid deicers before the storm to prevent the snow from bonding to the pavement. If there is snow and ice on the pavement after removal, consider using sand to provide traction. If bare pavement is needed, choose the correct deicer based on its effective melting temperature and spot treat the areas using a small amount of salt based on an application rate of 1 pound or 1 coffee mug per 250 square feet and spread evenly with about 2-3” between granules of salt. Clean up and reuse any sand or salt left on the pavement after the melting is done.
