Pavement Temperatures and Effects: Summary

Pavement temperature plays a major role in whether snow and ice melt or freeze on sidewalks and driveways. Pavement temperature is influenced by many factors, including air temperature, sunlight, shade, time of day, wind, humidity, freeze–thaw cycles, and ground conditions below the surface. Because of these factors, pavement temperature is often different from air temperature and can change throughout the winter. Understanding pavement temperature helps explain when melting or refreezing may occur and which ice melt products will work—or may not work at all. Pavement temperature can be checked or estimated using handheld infrared thermometers, state road weather (RWIS) stations, or the rough rule-of-thumb table in this module. Considering pavement temperature leads to safer walkways, more effective use of deicers, and reduced salt use.
