CTS Webinar: Maintaining Stormwater Ponds for Improved Phosphorus Retention

Stormwater ponds play an important role in protecting water quality, but phosphorus trapped in pond sediments can be released back into the water when low-oxygen conditions develop. This webinar will highlight University of Minnesota research examining how stormwater pond management practices can help reduce phosphorus pollution and maintain pond treatment capacity.

CTS emeritus scholar John Gulliver will share research findings using field measurements and the MinPond model to evaluate management approaches across six ponds. His presentation will explore how effective strategies such as intensive street sweeping, chemical treatment of sediments, and bubble aeration are in reducing phosphorus export from stormwater ponds.

The webinar is being held in conjunction with a CTS Environment and Energy Research Council meeting.

Speaker

John Gulliver is a CTS emeritus scholar and professor emeritus in the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geo- Engineering at the University of Minnesota. His primary research interests are in the areas of environmental fluid mechanics, chemical transport and fate in environmental systems, and flow and mass transport at hydraulic structures. His current research involves remediation of non-point source pollution from urban runoff. Specific research projects include the development of practices to remove dissolved contaminants from urban runoff, improved infiltration rate measurements in infiltration practices, and the cost-effective mitigation of climate change impacts on stormwater systems.
