From changing temperatures to the forces created by river ice, Minnesota’s bridges must withstand a wide range of environmental conditions. In this webinar, CTS Scholar Lauren Linderman will share research findings examining how climate change may affect thermally induced loading in Minnesota concrete bridges, including the potential implications for bridge design and adaptation strategies.

Linderman will also provide an update on ongoing research evaluating ice loading on bridge piers across Minnesota. This work is examining how ice thickness, crushing strength, river characteristics, and geographic variation influence ice loads, with the goal of informing more effective and efficient approaches to bridge pier and piling design on small to intermediate-sized rivers.

Together, these projects offer new insight into how Minnesota can design and maintain bridge infrastructure to meet changing environmental conditions.

The webinar is being held in conjunction with a CTS Transportation Infrastructure Research Council meeting.

Speaker

Lauren Linderman is an associate professor at the University of Minnesota's Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geo- Engineering and a CTS scholar. Her research combines analytical, experimental, and field studies in the area of smart structures for improving the long-term performance of civil infrastructure. Her primary areas of interest include structural monitoring, vibration mitigation strategies, data acquisition techniques, and concrete behavior. Her current efforts focus on leveraging the computational and sensing capabilities of distributed sensor systems for improving the long-term performance of bridge infrastructure.
