About the Event

This National Highway Institute (NHI) course (FHWA-NHI-380032A) provides an overview of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Roadside Design Guide. This course is intended for experienced safety and design engineers.

Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Apply the clear zone concept to all classes of roadway.
  • Recognize unsafe roadside design features and make appropriate changes.
  • Warrant roadside and median barriers.
  • Design roadside barriers.
  • Select the most appropriate end treatment.
  • Select the most appropriate safety hardware.
  • Correctly locate safety hardware.
  • Describe the elements of economic analysis.

Registration

If you are a MnDOT employee, please follow these instructions to register:

  1. Obtain supervisory approval for your training request and travel time.
  2. Use your Office/District Training Registration Process.
  3. When your training request is approved, you will receive an email enrollment confirmation.

If you are an FHWA employee, please follow your department training registration and payment process.

All other participants should register online. Non-MnDOT participants are charged $200 per seat, with no refund due to convenience cancel requests—or $550 per seat with full refund for any reason. Registration is limited to 22 individuals, so early registration is encouraged.

Who Should Attend

Experienced federal, state, and local highway engineers involved in the formulation and/or application of policies and standards relating to the design of safe roadside hardware. Course curriculum focuses primarily on high-speed roadside safety design.
